John S. Hirsch, MLIR, is co-founder of Guide Consulting and managing director of its predecessor company, Strategic Effectiveness Group, LLC. Founded in 1996, Guide Consulting is a leadership and organizational effectiveness firm specializing in the use of leading-edge technologies to improve leadership performance and organizational results. Its clients include a variety of governmental agencies and a diverse group of high-tech, manufacturing, and retail businesses.

Over the past three decades, John has gained recognized expertise in both people strategy and talent management. As a company vice president, a board co-chair of strategic planning, and an organizational consultant, his major initiatives have centered around how leaders improve results by aligning their organizations, teams, work groups, and individuals with the organization’s overarching strategies to produce improved results.

In the mid-1980s, John began a human development specialty when he was tapped to lead the formation of a Corporate Management Development and Organization Planning office at National Gypsum Company's headquarters. There he connected with the Center for Creative Leadership whose research has formed the foundation of his executive coaching practice.

John has led the installation of many performance and talent management systems. His one-on-one coaching became a natural outgrowth of training CEOs, executives and managers in the people processed he created with them. Over the years, he has coached hundreds of people using tailored approaches that are based on results-oriented techniques. His state-of-the-art methods emphasize:

  • Gaining holistic awareness of how most-often and least-often used skill/behaviors shape effectiveness, especially under stress.
  • Practicing self-coaching for improvement, by learning from everyday experiences.

John has held the chief human resource position with Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the ceramic tile division of Armstrong World Industries, and the glass division of National Gypsum Company. During his nearly 20 years with National Gypsum, he was division Vice President of HR and Corporate Director of Management Development and Organizational Planning. He has been a member of the Human Resources Planning Society since 1975, regular attending their conferences to keep up to date. His undergraduate degree is in divisional social science from the Honors College at Michigan State University, where he also earned an MLIR degree.

John is also active in the community. The Governor of Washington appointed him as a Trustee of Columbia Basin Community College in 2002. He was Chairman of the Board of the Tri-Cities Cancer Center. In Portland, his civic activities include Mercy Corps, the Pearl District Planning Committee, and the Portland City Advisory Board for the River District.
